  • Level 3 Mathematics in Context (1 Year Course)

    Course overview

Level 3 Core Mathematics (AQA) is designed to build students’ confidence and competence in applying mathematics to real life contexts. The course develops practical mathematical skills needed for work, further study, and everyday decision making, with a strong focus on problem solving, analysis, and interpretation of data.

Students explore topics such as statistics, financial mathematics, and mathematical modelling, learning to use mathematics to evaluate information, justify conclusions, and communicate reasoning effectively. The qualification helps bridge the gap between GCSE Mathematics and the mathematical skills required in higher education, apprenticeships, and employment.

Core Maths also supports students studying other Level 3 subjects such as Psychology, Geography, Business Studies, and science based subjects, where interpreting data and quantitative reasoning are essential.

    Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for students who:

    • Have achieved a strong pass in GCSE Mathematics
    • Enjoy applying mathematics to real world situations
    • Are interested in understanding environmental, social, and economic challenges through data
    • Want to develop strong numerical, analytical, and problem solving skills
    • Are studying subjects that require interpretation of statistics or data analysis
    Course content

Mathematics is a sequential subject, and the course builds upon the knowledge, understanding, and skills developed during GCSE Mathematics. Students apply these skills to practical contexts and real world scenarios.

    Paper 1 – Core content

    • Analysis of data
    • Mathematics for personal finance
    • Estimation and approximation

Paper 2 – Applications and modelling

    • Critical analysis of given data and models
    • Critical path and risk analysis
    • Expectation and probability in decision making
    • Cost benefit analysis
    Assessment

Assessment is entirely through external examinations.

    • Paper 1: Core assessed components – 1 hour 30 minutes (60 marks)
    • Paper 2: Optional content – 1 hour 30 minutes (60 marks)

Scientific calculators are permitted in both examinations.

    Progression opportunities

Level 3 Core Maths supports progression to:

    • University courses that require data analysis and quantitative reasoning
    • Degree subjects such as Business, Geography, Psychology, Social Sciences, and Environmental Studies
    • Apprenticeships and employment where analytical and numerical skills are valued
    • Further study where the ability to interpret and evaluate data is essential
    Skills developed
    • Application of mathematics in real world contexts
    • Data interpretation and statistical reasoning
    • Logical thinking and problem solving
    • Quantitative analysis and evaluation
    • Use of mathematical tools and technology such as calculators and spreadsheets
    • Communication of mathematical reasoning and conclusions

“Develop confidence in applying mathematical skills to real world situations, building practical problem solving abilities that support everyday life, further study and future employment.”
