    Course overview

    AQA A Level English Language and Literature is an integrated course exploring the relationship between language, literature and society. Students study literary and non literary texts side by side, applying methods of language analysis to understand how writers create meaning, shape perspectives and construct representations of people and places.

    The course is both analytical and creative. Students interpret texts with precision while also producing their own original writing. It is academically rigorous, intellectually challenging and highly relevant to the modern world.

    Course content

    Paper 1: Telling Stories (40%)

    Students explore how writers construct:

    • Place (including the AQA Paris Anthology)
    • Imagined worlds in prose fiction
    • Poetic voices and methods

    The focus is on narrative craft, genre, viewpoint and linguistic techniques.

    Paper 2: Exploring Conflict (40%)

    Students:

    • Write a re creative piece in a chosen voice
    • Produce a critical commentary reflecting on their choices
    • Study representations of conflict in drama

    Non Exam Assessment: Making Connections (20%)

    Students complete an independent investigation (2,500 to 3,000 words) linking a literary text with non literary material. Areas of exploration may include identity, voice, storytelling across forms, discourse and social media language.

    • 80% examination
    • 20% coursework

    Examinations include analytical essays and directed writing tasks. Coursework is internally assessed and externally moderated.
